Project goals

Since 2020, they have rapidly pioneered versatile Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology to remove historic CO₂ emissions from the atmosphere — anywhere, at any scale.

Our task:

Mission Zero required larger Laboratory and Workshop space to further progress their development work. They acquired the lease on 5nr newly refurbished (to CAT A) interconnecting railway arches and approached Bulb to carry out the design and build of their new premises.

The Bulb team worked closely with Mission Zero to develop the scheme from concept to delivery stage.

The barrel vaulted nature of the railway arches presented challenges from both an architectural layout and services coordination perspective, Bulb developed the design requirements to provide a satisfactory conclusion which met Mission Zero’s specific needs.

The laboratory contains custom-built electrochemical test rigs, high-precision gas analysis equipment, and pilot-scale DAC units, enabling rapid iteration and performance optimisation. The laboratory was designed with flexibility in mind to allow the team to build and test modules ranging from bench-scale cells to larger prototypes closer to commercial scale.

We created open-plan areas and dedicated meeting spaces to allow collaboration between engineers, chemists, material scientists, and project partners.

The facility was designed with sustainability in mind, incorporating energy-efficient systems and strict safety protocols to ensure responsible, safe operations.
